Empty Seat Town Hall — NJ CD4 (Rep. Chris Smith)

On March 22, 2025, Jersey Shore Blue, in collaboration with local constituents and advocacy groups, organized an Empty Seat Town Hall for New Jersey’s 4th Congressional District, highlighting the continued absence and lack of public accountability from Rep. Chris Smith.

This event was not symbolic — it was functional. Real questions were asked. Real solutions were discussed. Only the elected official was missing.

Purpose of the Action

  • Create a platform for constituents to voice concerns in the absence of their representative

  • Demand transparency and public engagement from Rep. Chris Smith

  • Address urgent issues including healthcare, reproductive rights, Social Security, and democracy protection

  • Demonstrate that civic dialogue cannot wait for political convenience

Key message:
“If you don’t show up, we’ll keep speaking up.”

What Happened

Community members gathered in a town hall setting, with a prominently displayed empty chair labeled for Rep. Chris Smith. The meeting featured:

  • Speeches from policy advocates, veterans, public workers, and healthcare activists

  • Participation from Congressman Andy Kim, who showed up to listen and speak

  • Handwritten questions collected from attendees

  • Green “TAKE ACTION” signs held throughout the room

Jersey Shore Blue facilitated an open discussion on policy and representation — a space Chris Smith has repeatedly declined to provide.

Community Response

Attendance exceeded expectations. Local press and grassroots media covered the event, and it gained visibility on social platforms. The community’s message was clear: constituents deserve to be heard — and seen.

Why It Matters

A democracy requires presence and participation. When elected officials fail to engage, communities must fill the void. This Town Hall proved that representation doesn’t pause just because one seat is empty.
