Call Your Reps...Demand Action Against Gun Violence

BACKGROUND (5calls..org)

The United States has more guns per capita than any other peer nation; Americans constitute about 4% of the world’s population but own 42% of all civilian firearms. On average, there is a mass shooting almost every day of the year in the United States, and the nation has far higher rates of gun homicides than any other developed nation. Firearm suicides in the US are also dismally common, with suicides actually comprising the majority of gun-related deaths. However, thanks to continued lobbying by the National Rifle Association (NRA), Congress has repeatedly failed to take meaningful action and curb gun violence.

Gun violence prevention experts have recommended a number of policy approaches to reduce gun violence:

  • Congress can close legal loopholes that allow people to buy guns without background checks from private sellers, websites, or gun shows. A move that over 80% of gun owners support.

  • Congress can institute universal background checks for both gun and ammo purchasers and require gun licenses, all measures supported by the vast majority of Americans.

  • Congress can adequately fund community-based interventions such as the nearly 20-year-old Ceasefire program, an underfunded effort that has helped to reduce gun violence in cities through education and public health crisis strategies.

  • Congress can reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, or pass new legislation banning the purchase of high-capacity magazines and military-style assault weapons.

America’s disproportionately high rates of gun-related deaths are both tragic and shameful. Congress can save lives by passing common-sense legislation to reduce gun violence.

Call Your Reps about the Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Background on Gaza

Update:

August 22, 2025: The Israeli government has begun a planned military assault and takeover of Gaza City while U.N.-backed global experts officially characterize Gaza’s hunger crisis as a man-made famine.

August 9, 2025: The Israeli government has approved and initiated Netanyahu’s plan to escalate attacks and occupy all of Gaza.

July 21, 2025: After multiple deadly shootings in Gaza where Israeli troops opened fired on Palestinians trying to reach U.N. aid convoys, 25 countries, including Britain and Canada, have issued a statement condemning Israel for their “drip feeding of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians.”

Despite a tentative ceasefire proposal initiated in January of 2025, the devastating war and humanitarian crisis continues in Gaza. On March 18th, the Israeli government launched surprise attacks that killed hundreds of Palestinians and multiple United Nations workers, and renewed aggressive ground operations to occupy more land. Additionally, on March 31st, Israeli troops executed 15 Palestinian medics who were clearly identified as such, buried them in a mass grave along with their ambulances, then plowed it over with military bulldozers. Israeli officials have made it clear that their primary goal is the occupation of the Gaza Strip, not the return of the hostages.

The United Nations has also sounded the alarm about Israel’s blockade of humanitarian goods and supplies into Gaza, warning that the population is now on the brink of famine. The foreign ministers of Germany, France, and the UK released a statement demanding that Israel adhere to international law and allow passage of aid to go unhindered. The Trump administration, however, has continued to support the Israeli government with offensive weapons and military equipment and has floated the idea of expelling all Palestinians from Gaza to develop the land under US ownership.

The United States cannot continue to fund and supply the Israeli government with weapons while it continues its atrocious attacks on Gaza, blocks humanitarian aid, and violates international law. Joint Resolutions of Disapproval (JRDs) to block the sale of offensive U.S. weaponry to Israel have been introduced in the House. Demand your members of Congress support this necessary restriction and pressure the Trump administration to work towards a fair and durable ceasefire deal that protects the people of Gaza.

Script:

Hi, I'm a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is ______.

First, a global hunger monitoring group has finally confirmed what we already know—that famine is present in Gaza, with 500,000 people facing "catastrophic" hunger. The US is enabling this famine through our continued complicity with the Netanyahu government, which is systematically obstructing aid deliveries. It’s unacceptable. It’s time to ratchet up the pressure and make them allow aid in. Only our country has the leverage to do this, and we absolutely must.

Also, I’m horrified that Trump has sent the FBI after John Bolton. The fact that he’s weaponizing the government against his enemies is appalling, and the fact that Congress is allowing him to do so unchallenged is even worse. Everyone should be able to trust that the government isn’t using its law enforcement powers to target them for personal reasons. I expect the Senator/Congressmember to make a strong statement to that effect. Thanks.

Call Your Reps...Stop the Anti-Vaccine Takeover of the CDC

Background

The Trump administration is continuing to undermine public health and scientific integrity by firing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Susan Monarez. Monarez was ousted for refusing to further decimate the CDC’s workforce and rubber stamp anti-vaccination extremists’ misinformation about lifesaving vaccines. Multiple other senior CDC officials left their positions in response to Monarez’s attempted firing, warning of the dire threats posed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s attacks on vaccine access and science more broadly.

Kennedy’s campaign against public health and vaccines, which have saved at least 154 million lives over the past 50 years, is a fundamental threat to the health and wellbeing of everyone in the United States. Congress must launch immediate investigations into the politicization of the CDC. They must also demand Kennedy’s resignation and an indefinite hold on further meetings of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a once-prestigious advisory panel now filled with Kennedy’s hand-picked anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists.

The CDC’s scientific integrity and access to safe, routine vaccinations are not partisan issues. Congress cannot sit idly by as Kennedy and his cronies decimate our nation’s public health infrastructure.

Script

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from (your town).

I’m calling to express my deep outrage over the politicization of the CDC. Anti-vaccine sentiment is deadly and has no place in our nation's public health agency. I ask that Senator/Congressman

[CHOOSE 1-3 options]:

  • investigate the firing of CDC director Monarez and the recommendations of the anti-vaccine advisory panel, (and)

  • call for the impeachment and removal of RFK Jr. as Secretary, (and)

  • call for the resignation of any HHS official who is irresponsibly promoting deadly anti-vaccination policies and restricting vaccine access.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
